The city lies directly at the intersection of the federal roads 2 and 176 in the border triangle Saxony, Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt in the western part of the administrative district Leipzig, approx. 25 km away from the city centre Leipzig.

A total of 29 districts are spread over an area of approx. 70 km². In recent years, the city has developed into an attractive residential location in the southern region just outside the gates of Leipzig, a city of trade and fairs. Groitzsch offers ideal conditions for families with children. The city has numerous day nurseries, from crèches to after-school care. With a primary school, a secondary school and the Wiprecht-Gymnasium there is an attractive school centre with a centrally located school bus stop.
